Why It’s Not Enough to have a Valid Passport

Did you know that a United States passport is not always enough to grant you access into every country? This may come as a shock, but it is the truth. Many countries are strictly enforcing entry rules and regulations in response to foreign security threats. Some destinations may require your passport to be of a certain time frame while other countries may require additional documentation. Here is a list of tourist entry regulations you may not have been aware of before:

  • Your passport must be valid for a MINIMUM of 6 months past your entry and stay within many nations including Europe, Africa, Central America, and more. To find out the exact rules for the country you will be visiting, you can use the interactive map located on the United States Government Travel and Passport site.
  • If you have traveled to Israel on your current passport, you may not be granted entry into many other Arab countries if there is a stamp from Israel in your passport book. To avoid this issue, when you enter Israel you can request an entry card which will be stamped and act as a proof you have legally entered and exited the country. This entry card will be required to be kept on you at all times while you are within Israel.
  • Many countries will require you to have at least 2 empty pages without stamps in your passport to be granted entry into the country.
  • Children are required to have a passport, even if they are newborns, if they are traveling internationally.
  • If your stay will keep you in a country for more than 90 days (3 months), you will often be required to formally submit a visa request that will grant you a legal extended stay in the country. Not all visa requests are guaranteed to be approved, so applying in advance is recommended.
  • If you are applying for a visa, you will also have to show proof of a return ticket to your home country and a proof of income during your stay.
  • You will need a visa to visit most African and Asian countries. You will also be required to have a visa if you are traveling to Brazil.
  • You may be required to have proof of immunizations for countries within Africa and Asian as well to ensure your entry.

As you can see, not all trips will be as easy to plan as others. To be sure that you have all of the right documentation within the right time frame, be sure to look up the country’s tourist entry requirements on their government site.
