Passport Timing: How Quickly Can I Expect to Receive It?

Traveling out of the country can be very exciting. However, you most likely need to complete a number of tasks before the day of departure. One of these undertakings that many people dread (and may even avoid) is obtaining a passport. Since this can be such an overwhelming task for some, you may find yourself pressed for time and wondering how long the process will actually take. This guide can help you understand how long the process typically takes and organize a plan to begin.

Gather Your Documents

Before you actually request your passport, you probably need to gather some documents – especially if it is your first time obtaining a passport. You can find out the official requirements at U.S. Department of State website. In most cases, you will need an official birth certificate and a valid driver’s license or state ID card in order to provide proof of identity and citizenship. There might be certain situations where this is impossible and a few other options may be available. If you don’t have these documents at your fingertips and need to order new ones, it may take a few days or longer to arrive, so it is important that you start the process early.

Obtaining a Passport Photo

In addition to the above requirements, you will also need a passport photo to send in with your passport application. A number of different locations offer passport photos. In addition to independent photographers, many post offices, shipping facilities, drug stores and even some grocery stores offer this service. No matter where you go, make sure you follow the guidelines put in place by the U.S Department of State. These requirements include making certain the photo is in color, that it is 2” x 2” in size and that you are not wearing a hat or otherwise blocking part of your face.

Standard Processing

If you’re well prepared with all your required documents ahead of time and aren’t traveling immediately, you can generally get by with standard processing for your passport order. This will involve submitting your application, documents and photograph for processing, and your passport can generally be issued to you in around 8 to 10 days – although this can vary depending upon holidays, volume of applications, etc. When you choose standard processing, there are no additional fees other than the standard passport application fee.

Expedited Services

Perhaps you just found out you need a passport in a hurry, or you have been delayed in gathering the required documents. If this is the case, you may need to obtain expedited service. You can request expedited service directly from the U.S. Department of State, or from a number of commercial firms offering this service. You will wind up paying a little more upfront, but when you do this, you are more likely to get your passport returned in a very timely manner and can avoid running into travel problems.

While there are many things you can do to expedite the process of obtaining your passport, you will make things easier on yourself if you start early and remain proactive about getting all the necessary things done. Spend some time reviewing the passport requirements and make certain you do not overlook anything. Remember, once you get this taken care of you’ll be on your way to your international destination before you know it!
