Is It Safe To Order Vital Records Online?

In June 7, 2018

Privacy and safety of personal information is a very hot topic right now, and for good reason! It’s important to be careful of how you’re sharing your information on the internet – from social media to the occasional retail therapy. At VitalChek, we specialize in providing you a secure website and ordering process to obtain the vital records you need. We’d like to share some tips with you on how to ensure your information is safe when ordering vital records online. Some of these tips can also be used to vet any website for keeping your information safe and secure.

  • Government authorized? – Vital records can only be issued by official government agencies. Any online ordering process authorized by these agencies will generally be clearly mentioned on the agency’s website. There should be a clearly marked, direct link to the ordering site for your convenience.
  • Reputable site – There are steps you can take to verify the the legitimacy of the website you’re considering using to order vital records online.
    • HTTPS – This should be visible in the search bar at the top of your browser. You may also see a lock icon next to the URL as well. This is especially important on the specific areas where you will be entering your personal data.
    • Privacy Policy – The website should also have a clear link to their privacy policy, which will outline how any personal information is collected and used.
    • Seal of approval – Verified monitoring agencies can provide a seal of approval for authenticity that would be displayed on the website in question. The seals can be from agencies such as TRUSTe, Verisign, Trust Guard, and others.
    • Identity Verification – When you order vital records online, identity verification may be a step within the ordering process. This can involve a series of identity-related questions that will help to prove you are indeed, yourself! This process may also involve providing a photo ID or other identification documents.
    • Shipping and insurance – Express shipping options with secure tracking and insurance should be available to you when ordering your documents.
  • Be on the lookout for red flags! – If a website claims to act as an agent of the authorized merchant, asks you to re-enter personal data onto a third party state platform, and/or charges significant additional fees, be skeptical!

We hope the above information has been helpful. Hopefully you have learned something new, and can feel confident when ordering your vital records online. If you need any assistance, VitalChek is happy to help!

  1. I ordered 2 certifided copies of my birth certificate on March 19, 2018–paid for them and am still waitting on them to arrive. At this point no one has answered where the information is or when i can expect it. Please help!

    1. Hello Marlene. We are sorry to hear that you have not yet received your birth certificates as of yet. While most vital records agencies process orders in a few of days there are always exceptions. Extended processing times can be caused by issues ranging from backlog of work at a specific agency to improper identity documentation to insufficien documentation, etc. Please contact us with your order number so we can look into the delay with your order. We can be reached at 800-255-2414, vitals.research@vitalchek.com or by private message on our VitalChek Facebook page where you will usually get a response in a matter of minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience and frustration this delay has caused you.

  2. i ORDERED 2 copies of my birth certificate. Had to pay a king’s ransom and give my credit card number and data. Then they wanted my social security number. I had grave doubts about giving it to them. The they ask for even more ID documentation as though the previous 10 were not enough. Then I was timed out of the order! Have no idea of they will keep my money, contact me, or issue the birth certificates. This adds up in my book to a shoddy and suspicious operation.
