Great news for New York state’s adoptees! If you were born in New York, the option is now available for you to obtain your pre-adoptive birth records. There are a few stipulations, and not every person born in New York will be able to obtain their pre-adoption NY birth certificate via online ordering, but this is exciting for those looking to research their genealogical backgrounds.

Pre-adoption NY birth certificates – How can I obtain mine?

If you’re an adoptee, you know the struggle. Up until now, adoptees were unable to obtain birth records that provided them identifying information regarding their biological birth parents, or exactly where they were born. Now, New York adoptees have the opportunity to obtain their pre-adoption NY birth certificate to help answer some questions about their past. 

Previously, New York pre-adoption records were sealed and were not available to adoptees without a court order. Now, adoptees over 18 who were born in New York State have the option to obtain certified copies of their birth records that contain information regarding their biological parents and where they were born. These pre-adoptive birth certificates are not official forms of identification, but can be used for genealogical research and to help assist adoptees in searching for their families. 

These records can be obtained online at or in person at the  vital records office near the adoptee’s place of birth. There are some stipulations and important factors to consider so let’s look into those details next. 

Things to consider when ordering your New York pre-adoption records

  • New York State pre-adoption certificates are available for online ordering for individuals born in New York State, but not those born within the five boroughs of New York City. If you were born in one of the five boroughs of New York City and wish to order your pre-adoption birth certificate, please go to for ordering information.

  • Pre-adoption certificates are only available to those people born within the state of New York.  If you were born outside the state of New York, but adopted in New York your pre-adoption certificate will not be available.   • A pre-adoption birth certificate is a certified copy of the original birth certificate, however, it cannot be used for identification purposes. This means you will not be able to submit this copy for career, passport, school, military or other purposes where proof of U.S. born identification is required.

  5. so glad I found this!!!! I ordered mine and my husbands birth Certificate. Mine Certificate came but my husbands did not. I emailed and emailed but did not get an answer as to why his didn’t arrive. I had to repeat the same information over an over. Today 3-3-20 I called an the only thing they told me was to wait. We’re going on a cruise, so we cannot wait. I had to order another birth certificate an have it expedited which cost me 37 dollars. So basically I’m out 20 bucks. Do they care… hell no. My husbands birth Certificate should have been here the same day mine came. I hope I don’t have to ever order anything else from them.

  6. I am in the same boat as others who have commented here. I placed the order on Jan 19, a charge was posted to my bank
    account, and I got the confirmation email saying it would take 30-45 business days. When that period ended and I’d
    received nothing, I went online to check and got the same message about the status not being available after 45 days. I
    I tired calling and listened to hold music and the repeating recording about long wait times for hours, day after day.
    Finally I found this post and sent an email to the address “Larissa” posted on this thread, so I hope to hear back, but
    not holding my breath.

    I am a very patient person and I understand that there must have been huge demand and there is also the rush on RealIDs
    and now of course the pandemic. But as with others on this thread, the “to protect privacy” 45 day thing seems like nonsense.

Following the advice here I wrote via Facebook (which is ridiculous by the way, and why did I have to find some two month old blog post to even get that information?!) and I heard back in a day- but the response was useless doubletalk, probably copied and pasted. I also found an actual email address elsewhere online, wrote to that, and got the same useless response, with an offer to refund the shipping cost when my order arrives. But it has been 12 weeks. 12 weeks! How do I know it wasn’t sent and lost in the mail? Why doesn’t the company run a report of all pending orders over a certain number of days and send a simple email acknowledging delays and providing some basic status of order information?! Why is there ZERO contact information on the website? No email address, no Facebook link. The email that cofirmed my order had a phone number, but anyone reading this thread knows how useless that number is. Why task staff with responding to blog posts and angry reviews online and only there provide contact information?! Poor leadership and management, that’s why. They probably have plenty of wonderful, hard working staff who have to put up with angry pissed of customers because of bonehead decisions and inaction by those in charge. I’d demand a refund, but given the state of affairs, to start over from scratch and order by mail directly through the State agency would take another 3 months. It is infuriating to not know if my document is going to come any day now, if it got sent and is lost in the mail, or if I should be working on getting a refund and starting over with some other approach.
