Opening a bank account is helpful for more than just storing your money in a safe place. Did you know your bank statement can act as a form of identity and proof of residency too? Opening a bank account is fairly easy. Banking associates will be able to walk you through the process of setting up your new bank account, but you should be prepared with the right documents before you go. Here is a list of of the minimum required documents banks will need to open your bank account:

  • Proof of Identity – The easiest way to meet this requirement is to bring your driver’s license, but a current and valid passport or other government-issued photo-ID will also be acceptable.
  • Money – You will need to deposit a sum of money into the new bank account that day. This may vary depending upon the bank, but a typical amount is around $25 or $50 to open your new account.
  • Verification of Personal Details – You will need to verify your date of birth and social security number, though some banks may not require the formal documents as proof. To be on the safe side, you can bring your social security card and your birth certificate.
  • A parent – If you are under the age of 18, you will need a parent present to set up your new bank account. Parents are either required to sign for, or co-sign with, minor children. Be sure to ask your bank for their minimum age requirement  to open a bank account since it may vary from bank to bank..
  • Your partner or spouse – If you are opening a joint bank account, you will need all account owners present at the time of the account opening. Each party should bring all of the above information as well.

You should do research to determine which bank is right for you since all banks offer different benefits. Benefits can include free checkings accounts, an additional monthly deposit into your account, overdraft protection, and more. Once you know which bank is right for you, think about whether or not you want a savings or checkings account. Your bank associate will be able to help you determine based on your needs which type is best for you.
