Father’s Day Tribute | Favorite TV Fathers

In June 17, 2018

Today is Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday in June in the United States. Officially signed into law in the 1970s, it’s been a tradition for much longer. As a fun Father’s Day tribute, this year we’re naming some of our favorite TV fathers that we’ve enjoyed over the years.

Current Favorite TV Fathers

Let’s face it, the popular series Game of Thrones has some pretty strong male figures (and a few great female ones too!), but not all of them are exactly what we’d call “father material.” Ned Stark seems to top most people’s list as a father they’d like to have, while the likes of Stannis Baratheon and Craster easily round out the bottom of this Father’s Day tribute dedicated to ranking the Game of Thrones dad’s from best to worst. And let’s not forget the Night King; technically he’s the father of all White Walkers. Brrr…definitely not someone likely to be on the list of “fathers you wished you had…”

The Night King is the father of all White Walkers, and he definitely gives us the chills!

Speaking of HBO, what about Westworld? You could consider park co-founder and creator of the hosts, Robert Ford a sort of father figure, but would you really want to? There’s also William’s father-in-law James Delos who doesn’t seem to be all that bad. And of course, the main character Dolores Abernathy’s dear old dad who greets her on the porch of their homestead every morning with his cup of coffee, our favorite Westworld father, Peter Abernathy. But considering the Abernathy family is all AI robots, how would that read on their birth certificate – or would they even have one?

When it comes to network television, NBC’s This Is Us was the breakout series that everyone’s been talking about since it first premiered in September of 2016. With a father like Jack Pearson, it’s hard for anyone in real life to compare. Sure, he has his issues, but between saving the family dog, always being there for his kids, and leaving behind a legacy that even in later seasons still is a main focus for the Pearson clan, is a tall order for anyone to follow. That’s probably why he’s one of our favorite TV fathers that we love to watch.

Additional Favorite TV Fathers

When it comes to television dads, some of them we love for their sarcastic nature and the way that they push us and want the best for us even when they’re saying it with that dry sense of humor of theirs…Red Foreman of That 70’s Show comes to mind here. Formally known as Reginald Albert Foreman, this character’s perpetually disgruntled nature was one we loved to laugh with (or at)!

Who could forget Phillip Banks? When Will Smith became the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, his Uncle Phil became his de facto dad. And with a cousin like Carlton, and of course the sisters Hilary and Ashley Banks, the crew definitely kept Phillip on his toes! It shouldn’t come as a surprise that this father and his entire family were so popular that they even have their own Fresh Prince Wiki!

Classic Favorite TV Fathers

When it comes to classic television dads, there are quite a few that come to mind. We’ve chosen a few of our favorites but would love to hear yours as well! Who doesn’t remember Charles Ingalls, from the beloved series Little House on the Prairie? Played by Michael Landon, his character was a steadfast figure on the prairie, always making sure the homestead and his family was well cared for, even in the most trying of times.

Life is tough on the plains whether you’re classic TV father Charles Ingall from Little House on the Prairie or modern AI dad, Peter Abernathy of Westworld.

Ward Cleaver of Leave It To Beaver is another classic dad from the 1950s. He was the suburban father of the time, tending to his family and dealing with whatever mischief Beaver might have gotten into that episode. Fun trivia about Ward – the actor who plays Ward, Hugh Beaumont even directed several episodes in later seasons of the show. How’s that for a great all around guy?

And where would we be without some of our favorite cartoon fathers? While Homer Simpson sits proudly atop this group of dear old dads for his sometimes doofy and always entertaining endearing behavior, both George Jetson and Fred Flinstone get favorite TV dad nods as well. George had the challenge of dealing with his children in the space age with all sorts of new technology, while dear old Fred yabba dabba doo-ed his way between work and family responsibilities with the help of sidekick (also a father) Barney Rubble and their wives, Wilma and Betty.
