Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr’s Legacy

In January 18, 2016

Martin Luther King Jr. was a man with a vision for a better world, a more equal world where men and women treated each other with kindness. During his lifetime, he was a voice of hope and positivity during a time where people were scared due to civil unrest and injustice. Through his non-violent marches, empowering speeches, and unwavering spirit, he helped bring peace and hope to an entire nation. Though he left this world too soon, his lessons and wisdom will never be forgotten as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy in 2016 and many years to come.

As MLK day approaches, we often reflect on how far we have come as a society, and how far we still have to go. This year, to truly honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. consider helping your neighbor or using a pay it forward motto for the day. While this should always be part of the daily routine, taking time out of your day to help someone you either know needs a hand, or a stranger who simply is having a bad day, will change both of your lives for the better. Here are some ideas on how you can help share the vision of Martin Luther King Jr. this holiday.

  • If you still have to commute to work this day, consider letting someone else take that seat on the train, helping someone with heavy luggage, or offer to car pool with coworkers to lend a hand.
  • Take the day to volunteer at a hospital or retirement home. Many times both facilities will have volunteers come and talk with patients, hand out reading material, or help deliver meals.
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food bank for the day.
  • Go through your closet and see if there are any old clothes that you no longer wear or need. Bag them up and drop them off at a donation box or your local thrift store. You can also donate old jackets to your local community center so they can be given to people who cannot afford warm jackets in the winter time.
  • Donate a couple of dollars to your favorite charity.
  • Hold the door open for someone.

Making the most out of Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy by helping out those in your community is the best way to honor him. Once the holiday is over, remember the wise words of Dr. King and try to bring them to be life every chance you get! Not only will you be happier, but the people in need around you will benefit from the extra act(s) kindness.
