How to Obtain Duplicate Divorce Records

In September 19, 2013

While we all understand the importance of securing critical personal documents, there are situations when they may no longer be available. Natural disasters, like last year’s Hurricane Sandy, home fires, residential theft, and other catastrophes can destroy the family records of an entire family at once. There are a variety of different ways to obtain duplicate personal records should the need arise.

Why Proof of Divorce is Important

Despite the fact that a divorce is never pleasant, proof of a divorce decree is an important personal document that should be stored with other vital statistics, such as birth certificates. Depending on the state where the divorce is granted, a divorce record can include the names of the individuals getting divorced, their birth dates, addresses, date and location of the marriage, and the date and location of the divorce a. It may also include other information related to the divorce, such as any restraining orders that were put in place, reasons for divorce, and case or filing information. All the data noted in the divorce record can vary based on the location of the divorce and the laws and regulations in place at the time.

A divorce record is important to have on hand for financial purposes, to use as proof of divorce to re-marry, and to avoid identity theft. Additionally, as more and more individuals research their family history, divorce records can help provide a complete picture of a family.
